Last night (June 30th) was the live showing of the Annual BET Awards Show.
The star-studded event featured some of Hip Hop & R&B’s greats as well as Black actors on film, athletes in sports, and singers of the Gospels. Famous celebrities and artists such as Gabrielle Union with beaux Dwayne Wade (2-time NBA Champion with the Miami Heat), Chris Brown, Nicki Minaj, host of the show Chris Tucker, Kendrick Lamar, A$AP Rocky, Trinidad James, 2 Chainz, Ciara, and former NSYNC member turned sexy R&B king, Justin Timberlake.
The awards show opened with a performance from singer/rapper Chris Brown. He performed a selection of his music like “Fine China” & ‘They Don’t Know” featuring vocals of the late Aaliyah. He also premiered a new track with Young Money’s first lady, Nicki Minaj. Nicki floated above the BET Awards audience in a cage – a first for any BET Awards show as they’ve moved into a new theater that’s more capable & equipped for fascinating lighting & displays. He later went on to win the FANdemonium award for the fourth year in a row.
Later on, after being award “Best New Artist”, Compton’s own Kendrick Lamar took the stage and gave the crowd two tracks off his “good kid m.A.A.d. city” album. Kendrick won the most awards at the show, walking away with 3 awards for “Best New Artist”, “Best Male Hip Hop Artist”, and “Best Collabo” for “F-ckin’ Problem”. He invited special guest Erykah Badu to perform the chorus to “B-tch Don’t Kill My Vibe” and it was a performance that could not be missed! Badu was looking just as good as she sounded by the way – for the fellas. As the song came to an end, Badu walked towards the displayed “stoop” along with Kendrick & I know eyes across the US were staring at that big, round A-S.
Throughout the 3-hour show, there were back to back surprises. R&B Diva Mariah Carey performed her recent single “#Beautiful (Remix)” with rapper Young Jeezy & Miguel. (It seemed like she was lip syncing.. She looked real enough, but didn’t seem all the way authentic. No shade though.)
Rapper 2 Chainz performed his single “Feds Watching” featuring Pharrell, which he later premiered the official music video for on BET’s Post Awards Show. He also invited rappers A$AP Rocky & Kendrick Lamar to tell the crowd they had a problem f-cking with bad b-tches, performing their hit collabo “F-ckin’ Problem”.
Other artists performed such as Robin Thicke along with T.I. & Pharrell for “Blurred Lines”. T.I. was busy doing the Pops dance with the dancers & it was the funniest thing to see how OLD T.I. acts – like your annoying uncle at the yearly BBQ’s. Ciara performed “I’m Out” with Nicki Minaj & “Body Party” which made the stage suddenly steamy with her sexy moves & waist gyrations.R. Kelly took the stage and took the crowd & audience at home on a walk down musical memory lane, singing some of his classic R&B songs. “Born Sinner” creator J. Cole gave an intimate performance of his single with TLC “Crooked Smile” and later turned up a little for “Power Trip” with Miguel. The biggest surprise of the evening was when Chris Tucker introduced DJ Bobby Konders & let the stage go mad with performances from Reggae & Dancehall artists like Beenie Man, Dawn Penn, Elephant Man, & Chaka Deums.
R&B legend “Uncle” Charlie Wilson was awarded Cadillac’s Lifetime Achievement Award for over 30 years of remaining relevant & being a great musical talent for R&B and several other genres of music. Singers Justin Timberlake & Pharrell Williams & rapper Snoop Dogg aka Snoop Lion performed with Charlie down an array of songs like “Beautiful”, “Signs”, and some of Charlie’s classics like “You Dropped A Bomb”, “Outstanding”, and “You Are”. He tore up the stage for a man of 60 years of age. Sounding and looking just as amazing as his performances in the 70’s Funk era, Charlie Wilson gave BET’s it’s best EVER Lifetime Achievement performance. You’d expect an old man to sound all withered but Charlie completely stomped that idea & gave it his everything! He did that.
The overall BET Awards Show was good. It was still somewhat unprofessional & poorly worked like every other BET Awards show in the past with some technical difficulties. At one point in the show, I actually heard someone yell out “Clear” to get Chris Tucker to realize the show was live again. However – BET’s getting better. Chris Tucker was funny at times, others he just seemed like he didn’t care to be on stage always missing cues for being on air or when the next act was ready.
I usually only care for the performances of the new artists or the songs I like – but this year, I watched every single performance and enjoyed each. Stay on the site to catch footage of select performances or visit BET.com for more details.
