In wave of the news of the murder of 18-year-old Michael Brown, the war on police brutality n Ferguson, MI has spread nationwide and it’s causing everyone, even the celebrities to respond in protest.

Rapper J. Cole has never been one to shy away from controversial subject matter, and that sure isn’t the case today. Addressing the shooting of Missouri teen Mike Brown, “Be Free” is the latest drop from J. Cole to tackle serious subject matter head on. The song features very little actual “rapping,” instead finding the emcee crooning mournfully over a somber piano-laced instrumental.

Give the track a listen and share your thoughts.

Before releasing the single, Cole had this to say about the release himself:

“Rest in Peace to Michael Brown and to every young black man murdered in America, whether by the hands of white or black. I pray that one day the world will be filled with peace and rid of injustice. Only then will we all Be Free” – Cole
