Summer Jam 2013 at the MetLife Stadium was bananas! Back to back surprise guests and performances, old faces & new. After 20 years, you knew Hot 97 had to bring all the big names out to perform.
Starting with the Pre-Show, Bodega Bamz, Troy Ave, Action Bronson, Smoke DZA, A$AP Ferg, Vinny Chase and Joey Bada$$ all graced the festival stage outside before the main show commenced.
Inside the stadium, there were a slew of expected performances that were more than stellar and some major surprises.
Miguel brought out the beautiful Mariah Carey to perform their new ballad “#Beautiful”. Mariah rocked her infamous booty shorts and looked damn good on that stage for a woman over 40 with twins so congrats to her. Miguel even brought out J. Cole for “Power Trip.”
Chris Brown had about an hour set performing hits like “Beautiful People”, “Strip”, and “Don’t Judge Me”. His dancers were there too, bouncing around the stage like aliens in their costumes. Fabolous later came on and represented for Brooklyn, performing “Ready” with Chris Brown and shocked the audience when he introduced the Queen Bee, Lil’ Kim. She started into her “Hard Core” album hit “Queen Bitch” to booming applause and screams. She looked good too.
A$AP Rocky welcomed Bone Thugs-N-Harmony during his set, paying respect to one of the hip-hop group’s that influenced him. He also performed his own tracks like “Peso”, “Fuckin’ Problem”, and brought out Trinidad James and A$AP Ferg for the summer banger “Work (Remix)”.
Kendrick Lamar rocked out with “Bitch, Don’t Kill My Vibe,” “Poetic Justice” and his remix of “U.O.E.N.O.” He also showed love to his TDE crew, Black Hippy, uniting with Schoolboy Q, Jay Rock and Ab-Soul onstage to deliver a variety of tracks together.
2 Chainz rapped through his catalog of hits like “I’m Different”, “Crack”, and “Birthday Song”. He also performed a new song but the highlight was when he grabbed the mic for “I Love Dem Strippers” with Nicki Minaj. Nicki was supposed to headline last year’s Summer Jam but refused when she was insulted by Hot 97’s personality Peter Rosenberg. Now that they’ve patched up their relationship, Nicki knew it was the best move to grace the stage. She then performed their collaboration “Beez in the Trap.”
The Wu Tang clan also hit the stage and brought that old school real Hip Hop to the stage. Twenty years ago those same men performed on Hot 97’s Summer Jam, and twenty years later they are still relevant and still able to perform for their fans. Real music just never dies.
French Montana was the last act to perform and with all the bangers he had this year, it only made sense that he got last. He got a chance to turn up the heat some to the max with his banger “Pop That” dropped and he treated the crowd to guest verses by Rick Ross and Lil Wayne. The “Haaan” man himself also received rave reviews when his new track, “Ain’t Worried Bout Nothin,” blasted throughout the stadium. Unfortunately, it was cut short as the lights turned on and announcements were played throughout the stadium that Summer Jam 2013 was over and for everyone to exit.
Overall, Summer Jam 2013 was a movie. There were some glitches here and there but a good show always has it’s moments. If you missed out, that sucks but stay tuned for video of all the performances. #WatchThis
