Mayor Adams Puts Pressure On Biden For Migrant Work Permits

Mayor Eric Adams is once again hitting the streets to demand swift action from the Biden administration in granting work permits for the thousands of migrants who have entered New York City since the past year. Speaking to a gathering of around 200 people in Lower Manhattan on Thursday, Mayor Adams stressed the urgency for federal authorities to step up, echoing Governor Kathy Hochul’s recent plea for assistance during her visit to the White House.

Addressing the crowd at Foley Square, Mayor Adams emphasized the need to expedite work visas and described it as a matter of common sense. He expressed the importance of continuing to provide opportunities for individuals to pursue the American dream by working hard to improve their lives and support their families, regardless of their origin or initial resources.

Calling upon national leaders, Mayor Adams asserted that such challenges should not be imposed on New York City, stating that the city deserves better treatment and support.

In a closed-door meeting, Governor Hochul held discussions with President Biden’s chief of staff, Jeff Zients, for nearly three hours. Following the meeting, a statement was released outlining plans for a national campaign in September to guide migrants who have received clearance to work through the process of securing legal employment.

The released statement emphasized the commitment of administration officials and the governor to ongoing dialogues in the coming weeks, while also urging Congress to adequately fund programs that aid communities accommodating migrants and to pass immigration reform.

Additionally, on Thursday, a coalition of City Council leaders joined the call for federal work permits to be granted to the migrant population.
