South Carolina Killer Found In NYC

After eluding authorities for 11 weeks following the revocation of his early release, a convicted murderer from South Carolina has been apprehended in New York City.

Jeroid Price, 43, was taken into custody on Wednesday around 11 AM based on a tip from a South Carolina resident who reported that Price was staying in an apartment in the Bronx. South Carolina’s state law enforcement division confirmed the arrest in a statement.

According to South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson, Price’s arrest was not met with any resistance. Although the situation was not entirely peaceful, no use of force was necessary.

Law enforcement officials believe that during his 11 weeks on the run, Price traveled through Charlotte, NC, Atlanta, New York City, and possibly even New Mexico.

Price is expected to be transported back to South Carolina to serve the remainder of his 35-year sentence. Once back in the state, he will be taken to the Kirkland Reception and Evaluation Center until a permanent placement is determined. As an escaped criminal, he will not be extradited.

The early release that led to Price’s escape occurred in March when Democratic state Representative Todd Rutherford, who also served as Price’s lawyer, and prosecutor Byron Gipson made a deal. However, the agreement was not subject to a public hearing, which resulted in its revocation by the South Carolina Supreme Court in April.

Following his failure to surrender after the release was revoked, Price became a fugitive. He had been convicted for the fatal shooting of Carl “Dash” Smalls Jr. at a nightclub in Columbia, SC, in 2002, one year prior to his conviction.

The deal was approved by Circuit Judge Casey Manning, who has since retired, despite being aware of the Supreme Court’s ruling.
