Sudden Change In NYC Weather As Heat Advisory Warning Is Issued

New York City experienced severe thunderstorms on Tuesday afternoon, with the ominous black skies suddenly giving way to flash floods and wind gusts of up to 50 mph across the boroughs. This weather event was a prelude to the city being gripped by an “oppressive” heatwave later in the week.

According to meteorologists, the storm’s conditions were fueled by a “heat dome” that had been covering much of the US for weeks. As the atmosphere heated up throughout the day, the storms became more unstable and gained severe characteristics.

Thankfully, the worst of the deluge subsided by the end of the afternoon, and the city was expected to dry out during the evening hours. However, the aftermath left New York City bracing for its first official heatwave of the summer, defined as three or more consecutive days with temperatures in the 90s.

The upcoming days were predicted to be scorching, with up to four days of temperatures over 90 degrees, exacerbated by stifling humidity. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday were projected to be the hottest days, with Friday likely to be the peak of the heatwave.

As it stands, Wednesday could also reach 90 degrees. Humidity combined with the heat was responsible for the feeling of oppression during the heatwave.

An excessive heat advisory or warning might be issued if the heat index reaches 95 to 99 degrees for two days or 100 to 104 degrees for any period, which could happen on Friday, as predicted by the meteorologist. The last time such an advisory or warning was in effect for the city was in August 2021. If you find the heat unbearable, forecasters suggest heading to the shore for some relief.
