New York TikToker Exposes The Increased Rental Prices In The City

It’s widely known that rent in New York City is exorbitantly high, often reaching thousands of dollars per month for a one-bedroom apartment on average. The price can vary depending on factors such as location, square footage, and whether you have roommates or not.

However, the idea of finding a decent two-bedroom apartment in the city for just a few hundred dollars a month seems almost too good to be true, right? Well, that’s what one TikTok user discovered when he delved into the history of his apartment.

In a video, TikTok user Drake Pooley (@drakepooley) decided to investigate if his New York City landlord was overcharging him for rent. He revealed that he lived alone in a two-bedroom apartment in Manhattan’s West Village. A user in the comment section suggested he order his unit’s rent history to check for any discrepancies.

Drake followed the advice and was astonished by the results. According to the documents, back in 1984, the same two-bedroom apartment in the West Village was under rent control and was being leased for a mere $193 a month. The previous tenant had lived there for an incredible 33 years, paying less than $200 a month until 2018 when he either moved out or passed away.

Within a month of the tenant’s departure, the rent for the apartment skyrocketed to $3500. As of 2023, when Drake made the video, he revealed that he was now paying $3847 for the same two-bedroom unit. While he believes the current price is fair given today’s market conditions, he couldn’t help but contemplate the many people still paying $200 a month for similar units in the city.

Drake concluded his video with a mix of awe and frustration, acknowledging that while it’s incredible for those benefiting from long-standing rent-controlled rates, it also raises questions about the affordability and efficiency of housing for others in the city.
