You’re likely familiar with some of the wealthiest individuals in the nation, such as Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and Warren Buffett. However, are you aware of the richest person in New York?

Unless you happen to have a few billion dollars lying around, the distinction probably doesn’t belong to you.

Each year, Forbes unveils its roster of the 400 wealthiest people in the United States. This comprehensive list encompasses individuals who have amassed their fortunes through various means, including investments, software, sports, retail, real estate, family connections, and the food industry.

To secure a spot on this year’s list, billionaires needed to possess a minimum net worth of $2.9 billion collectively. As a group, the Forbes 400 members hold a staggering $4.5 trillion in wealth.

According to the Forbes 400, the wealthiest person in New York is Michael Bloomberg. As a co-founder of Bloomberg LP, a financial information and media firm, Bloomberg boasts an estimated net worth of $96.3 billion. This is a significant increase from just 5 years ago when Bloomberg was worth just north of $50 billion.

The 2023 Forbes 400 list introduces some noteworthy firsts. For instance, Michael Jordan becomes the first professional athlete to grace the list, thanks to his off-court earnings, particularly from his agreements with Nike and the sale of his stake in the Charlotte Hornets. Another newcomer is Josh Kushner, the son of real estate developer Charles Kushner and the brother of Jared Kushner.

However, former President Donald Trump, who is Jared Kushner’s father-in-law, did not make the Forbes 400 this year. Additionally, Sam Bankman-Fried, who is currently facing federal charges, fell off the list.

Elon Musk secured the top position on the list, boasting an estimated worth of $251 billion, primarily attributed to his involvement in companies such as Tesla, SpaceX, and X (formerly Twitter). This also establishes him as the wealthiest individual in Texas, one of the 40 states represented on the Forbes 400 list. Notably, the states without any representation on the list this year include Alabama, Alaska, Delaware, Maine, Minnesota, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, Vermont, and West Virginia.

As in the previous year, California leads the pack with the most residents on the list, boasting 87 individuals, an increase of seven over the 2022 count. New York follows closely behind with 62, Texas with 53, Florida with 46, and Illinois with 13. Ten states, along with the U.S. Virgin Islands, are represented by just one resident each on the list: Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Kentucky, Nebraska, New Hampshire, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina, and Utah.
