A former postal carrier from the Anchorage United States Postal Service was apprehended on Wednesday in Missouri following an indictment by a federal grand jury in Alaska. He is accused of committing fraud and theft by allegedly pilfering checks from the mail.

Court records reveal that 25-year-old Nha Xiong is accused of tampering with bank checks. He reportedly used Whiteout to erase the names of the original recipients and substituted them with his own name. This alteration was done to make the checks appear as if they were payable to him, which he then deposited into his own bank account.

Between November and December 2021, Xiong is alleged to have deposited six stolen checks, sourced from Northrim Bank, Bank of America, KeyBank, and Mt. McKinley Bank. The total amount of these checks exceeded $39,000.

Xiong faces charges of bank fraud, as outlined under 18 U.S.C. §1344(2), and theft of mail by a postal employee, under 18 U.S.C. §1709.

His initial court appearance is scheduled for a future date in the U.S. District Court for the District of Alaska. Upon conviction, Xiong could be subject to substantial fines and a maximum sentence of up to 30 years in prison.

The investigation into this case is being conducted by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General.
