Saltbae Burger Closes In NYC – Locals Don’t Care One Bit

It’s no secret that New York is the culinary capital of the world. The amount of exceptional restaurants within the city is simply unheard of anywhere else on the planet. New York locals do not know how good they have it. However, popularity and fame don’t always equate to quality when it comes to dining experiences – and this was proven with yet another disaster, this time from Salt Bae.

The Salt Bae burger restaurant in NYC, owned by the world-renowned culinary figure, closed its doors, and not too surprisingly, everyone seemed pretty happy about it. The restaurant was plagued by very average reviews and very overpriced food. All in all, it was pretty much a glorified Instagram spot that happened to be a restaurant. This was pretty much a place to go and eat whilst saying “look at me, I have a lot of money”.

Nusret Gökçe, known as Salt Bae gained immense online fame in 2017 after a video of his salt-sprinkling technique went viral. Formerly a renowned chef in Turkey, Salt Bae’s international recognition led him to open restaurants in various locations, including New York City, London and Dubai. However, that’s when the problems began.

Saltbae Burger, one of Salt Bae’s NYC establishments, faced severe criticism. It received the typical backlash that many controversial celebrity-led restaurants encounter, such as being overpriced and gimmicky. Salt Bae and his restaurant were accused of sexism due to their offering of a free “ladies burger,” which essentially consisted of a small veggie patty in a pink bun. The assumption that female guests would prefer a veggie patty at a burger restaurant was questioned.

The final blow to Saltbae Burger came from critiques regarding the food itself. One would expect a restaurant associated with a viral seasoning technique to deliver on flavor, but as with most restaurants with this much hype, it once again missed the mark by some way.

With critics disparaging the culinary offerings, visitors calling out sexist menu items, and the unfortunate timing of its opening in early 2020, Saltbae Burger was destined for failure from the start. While New Yorkers may celebrate its closure, it comes as no surprise to anyone who has even glanced at the restaurant while walking past, let alone set foot inside and tasted the food.
