NYPD Car Chases Up Over 500% Since 2022

Ghost cars are becoming a problem that can no longer be handled in NYC. NYPD officials have noted a rise in vehicles displaying fraudulent paper license plates and attribute it to an increase in dangerous police chases across the city.

There has been nearly a 600% surge in police pursuits in the first few months of 2023 compared to the same period in 2022. The data from NYPD’s 911 calls indicates that officers engaged in pursuits 304 times during the first quarter of this year, surpassing the total number of pursuits in all of last year, which was 214. If this continues, there will be well over 1000 pursuits by the end of 2023.

Perhaps the main reason for these pursuits is the proliferation of illegal bikes and cars without proper registration and insurance leads to traffic violence, unregulated street activities, and incidents of robberies and shootings.

The increase in pursuits has come with incidents of officers getting injured and accidents involving civilians and suspects. Recent examples include a police chase in Canarsie, Brooklyn, where four officers were injured, and a chase in the Bronx involving a stolen car that caused multiple crashes.

The latest NYPD crime statistics show a 4% decrease in major crimes in June 2023 compared to the same month last year. However, there has been a significant increase in citywide car thefts by 23%, and felony assaults have remained on par with June 2022. As with any kind of statistic, it is very difficult to get a real picture of what is happening as we never fully know whether any data is being presented to look much better than reality actually is.
