A manslaughter charge has been filed against a 16-year-old boy who was driving a stolen car involved in a rollover crash in Manhattan over the Fourth of July weekend, resulting in the deaths of two of his friends and injuries to three others, according to police.

The teenager, whose name was not disclosed due to being a minor, was arrested on Wednesday and faces multiple charges, including two counts of manslaughter, two counts of criminally negligent homicide, 10 counts of assault, six counts of criminal possession of stolen property, unauthorized use of a vehicle, criminal mischief, and two counts of reckless endangerment in relation to the crash that occurred on July 3.

Authorities stated that the young driver was recklessly speeding in a stolen 2019 Hyundai Elantra with four passengers, running red lights on Audubon Avenue. The vehicle was then T-boned by a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee, causing it to spin and block the intersection.

The teenager subsequently lost control of the car, which continued north on Audubon Avenue and collided with an unoccupied 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee, resulting in the Hyundai flipping over and initiating a chain-reaction crash involving two parked cars. Two of the sedan’s passengers, identified as Daniel Duran (15) and Daniel Rodriguez (17) from the Bronx, did not survive their injuries. Two other 15-year-old passengers were critically injured and hospitalized.

The teenage driver also sustained serious injuries and was taken to the hospital. First responders had to extricate the boys from the wrecked vehicle by removing the roof. The 53-year-old driver of the Jeep Grand Cherokee was treated at Harlem Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
