In a tragic incident, a 91-year-old US Marine veteran took his own life by jumping from a Manhattan building overlooking Central Park early Wednesday morning. Authorities and his daughter believe that he may have made this devastating decision after realizing that he could no longer help his ailing wife, who is suffering from late-stage heart failure.

Harold Tekel, the Marine veteran, plunged from the 17th floor of the 35-story tower located at 200 Central Park South at around 7 a.m., according to officials. His daughter, Marci Guillerme, shared that her father likely reached a point where he accepted the reality of her mother’s medical condition and his own deteriorating eyesight, which led him to choose this tragic path.

Guillerme expressed her disbelief, stating that she never expected such an outcome from her father. She mentioned that he might have considered taking a handful of pills with her mother, but she never anticipated him taking this drastic step before her. The devastated daughter added that he realized his love for his wife could no longer save her. She emphasized that he was an immensely cherished member of their family.

The couple, who were described as inseparable, recently celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary in June. It was revealed that Tekel had made a similar attempt a couple of weeks prior to this incident, suggesting that signs of depression were present, though his family was shocked by his ultimate decision.

Tekel had served as a staff sergeant in the Marines at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, and his daughter fondly remembered his immense pride in being a Marine, often humorously referring to his status when making phone calls.

Tragically, Tekel’s final wish is to be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery. He is survived by his three daughters, four grandchildren, and a great-grandchild.
