According to police, a 26-year-old man is accused of fatally stabbing his 20-year-old sister in their Manhattan apartment on Wednesday. The tragic incident took place in NYCHA’s Lincoln Houses in East Harlem around 8 a.m. Shayla Johnson, the victim, was found with stab wounds to her neck and chest and was pronounced dead after being taken to NYC Health and Hospitals/Harlem. The suspect, Rodney Johnson, was arrested at the apartment they shared. This is not the first time he has faced legal trouble for violating restraining orders; he had been previously arrested in September 2019 and March 2017 for violating orders of protection.

The siblings’ older sister, Shekemea Johnson, described Rodney as struggling with anger issues for years, leading to physical violence towards Shayla and past girlfriends. Despite therapy attempts, he did not stick with the programs, and the justice system quickly released him on both occasions he violated the orders of protection against Shayla.

Just two days before the tragic incident, Shayla informed her older sister that Rodney was threatening her, and she planned to call the police. Unfortunately, things escalated, and on the day of the incident, Rodney attacked Shayla when she was in the shower, stabbing her 17 times.

Shekemea fondly remembered Shayla as a generous and vibrant young woman who had recently graduated from high school. She loved spending time with friends and traveling. As for Rodney, Shekemea noted that his anger issues had worsened over time, making it challenging for him to hold down jobs. Their mother, who was present during the attack, was afraid of him.

Rodney, in a disturbing twist, called the police on himself after the incident, reporting what he had done. He was remanded after his arraignment in Manhattan criminal court, but his lawyer could not be immediately reached for comment.

As for the criminal court orders of protection, the Manhattan District Attorney’s office confirmed there was no active order at the time of the incident, and details of Rodney’s past orders were sealed. The devastating loss of Shayla has left her family grief-stricken, and they hope for justice to be served.
