A 26-year-old off-duty NYPD officer named Alexis Martinez was tragically killed in a murder-suicide incident in the Bronx. The incident occurred at his father’s apartment in Soundview. According to the NYPD, the older man, who may have been suffering from mental illness, shot Alexis in the head around 12:45 p.m. on Wednesday. He then turned the gun on himself in another room of the apartment.

The city’s Police Commissioner, Edward Caban, expressed his condolences and posted a video on Twitter showing Alexis Martinez’s body being removed from the home, with his colleagues saluting while draped in an NYPD flag.

Both Alexis and his father were found deceased by responding officers. Alexis was a member of a police baseball team, and a friend from the same division went to check on him after he failed to show up for a game, only to discover the tragic scene.

The officer’s pregnant friend who was present in the apartment was taken to the hospital due to emotional distress, but her connection to Alexis or his father remains unclear.

Alexis Martinez had been with the NYPD since 2018, serving in the Bronx narcotics division and previously at the 34th Precinct.

The Police Benevolent Association shared their sympathies, requesting prayers and support for Alexis Martinez’s family and colleagues during this unimaginable loss.
