An individual residing in New York City has reported that the sidewalk in front of the building where he is employed has deteriorated to the extent that he can observe the subway platform beneath it.

Joey Bonbon shared a video on TikTok showing that this was no joke. Although the hole itself is quite small, the video reveals light emanating from the platform of the Spring Street subway station in Manhattan. As of today, the video has racked up 1.7 million views, with no sign of slowing down just yet.

Due to the attention that the video received on social media, the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) dispatched work crews to evaluate the structural stability of the ceiling within the station, employing a procedure known as a ‘sound and tap test.

During the examination, workers tapped the ceiling to assess its structural integrity. It was noted that fragments of concrete fell onto the platform during this process, prompting the crews to collect two small bags of loose debris.

Despite these observations, the station was reportedly determined to be structurally sound and remained operational. However, the portion of the platform beneath the cavity was closed off.

The cavity itself was concealed and cordoned off using police fencing and caution tape at the street level.

According to the city’s official website, property owners are held accountable for “installing, repairing, and maintaining sidewalks adjacent to their properties.” With that being said, it’s not 100% confirmed, just who is responsible for this area of sidewalk and furthermore whether the station impacts this ownership in any way. As of 2023, the city administration claims to replace over two million square feet of sidewalk annually.
