Streamlining your daily plans in New York City has become significantly more convenient. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has unveiled an all-new MTA app on Tuesday, August 8th, replacing the existing MYmta app. This fresh application is set to encompass schedules, service alerts, recommended routes, and a host of other features for all public transportation options in the city, spanning the NYC subway, buses, the Long Island Rail Road, Metro-North, the PATH, and the AirTrain.

Beyond consolidating a plethora of transportation services within a single platform, the app will provide users with “real-time, location-based notifications” tailored to their specific journeys. Additionally, the app will grant users the ability to book Access-A-Ride trips and conveniently check for elevator and escalator outages at subway stations, thus enhancing accessibility for riders.

Developed collaboratively with Axon Vibe, the app is currently undergoing beta testing and offers the subsequent features, as outlined in an MTA press release:

  • Effortlessly plan trips, accessing recommended routes and reviewing schedules for subways, buses, Long Island Rail Road, Metro-North, PATH, and AirTrain.
  • Stay informed about service alerts and both planned and unforeseen service adjustments, along with the best alternative routes.
  • Save preferred routes and stops for quick access to arrival times.
  • Utilize real-time bus tracking to monitor the approaching location of a bus, its estimated arrival time, and its journey progress, encompassing details on stops and minutes to arrival.
  • Acquire real-time on-board crowding information for railroads.
  • Seamlessly book Access-A-Ride trips, discover pick-up and drop-off schedules for trips, and review trip history.
  • Experience improved search functionality that conveniently highlights MTA stations and the available services at a glance.
  • Dynamic strip maps and station views illustrate the currently operational services.

Shanifah Rieara, the MTA’s Acting Chief Customer Officer, emphasized the significance of user-friendly travel tools for encouraging greater public transit usage. She noted that the new MTA app effectively achieves this goal by providing riders with the essential information they need within a couple of taps.

The upcoming app will be accessible via the Apple App Store and Google Play Store later in the year. If you currently have the MYmta app installed on your device, there’s no need to manually download the new version; the app will automatically update to the new iteration on your mobile device.
