Mayor Adams Agrees To Move 1200 Migrant Families Out Of The City

New York City Mayor Eric Adams and Governor Kathy Hochul have reached an agreement to move 1,200 migrant families out of the city, marking a significant step by the state to address the ongoing crisis, as reported by The Post.Hochul, who has been under criticism for her absence during the disputes between Adams and suburban areas regarding migrant housing, is also planning to deploy the National Guard to staff 13 shelter locations outside the city, according to insider sources. This development follows a recent warning from Mayor Adams, his 36th such message to President Biden, in which he cautioned that the migrant crisis could severely impact the city unless federal funding is swiftly increased. However, the federal government has thus far only contributed or pledged a mere $142 million, and President Biden has not committed to providing additional aid.Under the deal, the city would be relieved of the responsibility to house the 1,200 migrant families. These families are anticipated to be relocated anywhere from Westchester County to the state capital of Albany, according to sources familiar with the matter.”There have been discussions between the governor’s team and the mayor’s team about how to distribute migrants, who are straining the city’s existing resources. The state has agreed to a plan that involves moving families to various counties across New York state,” revealed a source from City Hall who was privy to the negotiations. The planned relocations are expected to begin as early as the upcoming week and will occur in counties with the necessary infrastructure to support these families. It has been emphasized that the relocations will be voluntary. This move also relates to the growing concern over a surge in migrant children enrolling in public schools before the September 7th start date. State Commissioner of Education Betty Rosa had discussions with Adams officials to identify school districts better equipped to provide support for these children.A list of state-run locations indicates that the National Guard will manage three hotels in Albany County, four in Westchester County, three in Buffalo County, and one each in Schenectady, Orange, and Dutchess counties. The National Guard has initiated plans to allocate its personnel between the city’s shelter sites and other locations across the state, with no additional staffing required.Over the past few months, hundreds of migrants have already been relocated upstate, with 600 in Albany County, 500 in Erie County, and 200 in Schenectady County, according to Hochul. However, these movements were the result of agreements between NYC officials and local politicians.Since the previous year, over 100,000 migrants have arrived in the city, and currently, close to 60,000 individuals are being housed across 198 shelter sites in the five boroughs.
