MTA Will Increase Services On R & N Lines In City

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is set to enhance subway operations on New York City’s N and R lines. Commencing Monday, August 28, train frequencies will be adjusted from a 10-minute interval to an 8-minute interval between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. on weekdays. This change, made possible by a $35 million allocation from the FY 2024 New York State Budget, will cater to approximately 180,000 commuters.

This strategic modification comes as a direct response to feedback obtained through the ‘Customers Count’ surveys, where riders expressed discontent with the wait times experienced on the N and R lines. Richard Davey, President of New York City Transit, is optimistic that the increased service frequency will elevate overall customer contentment.

Aligned with its commitment to improving the subway system’s dependability and effectiveness, the MTA is actively addressing the input provided by its clientele. Shanifah Rieara, Acting Chief Customer Officer at MTA, affirmed that this initiative underscores the MTA’s responsiveness to customer opinions, with the ensuing enhancement poised to deliver an improved travel experience. The N and R lines significantly link essential areas from Bay Ridge to Borough Hall.

The MTA’s decision has garnered commendation from state legislators. State Senator Andrew Gounardes extended gratitude to the MTA for the prompt implementation of these adjustments and acknowledged the concerted efforts of advocates who contributed to this outcome. Assembly Member Jo Anne Simon was instrumental in supporting the MTA budget that allocated resources for the augmented service on the N and R lines.

In preceding weeks, the MTA had already heightened services on other subway lines. From July 2, weekend trains were operating at intervals of eight to 10 minutes. Starting August 7, C trains embraced an eight-minute frequency on weekdays. August 12 witnessed 1 and 6 trains operating every six minutes on weekends. The MTA’s forthcoming plan for July 2024 involves further weekday service enhancements on other lines, with trains arriving every eight minutes and an augmented weekend service featuring trains every 10 minutes.
