Special Ed Shortcomings For Students Of New York City
A recent report issued by the New York City Comptroller’s office indicates that a significant number of students throughout the five boroughs are not receiving the special education services they are entitled to.These services encompass speech therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy.
According to federal and state regulations, the city is obligated to furnish special education assistance to every student with a disability. However, during the previous academic year, more than 13,000 students were unable to access these vital services.
Amy Tsai and other parents are asserting that their children with special needs are not benefiting from the personalized education program services that have been recommended for them.Amy Tsai, who is a representative in the community education and Council 10 borough, stated, “The Department of Education has disregarded its duties.”According to the report by the comptroller’s office, expenditure on special education claims has surged by tenfold in the past ten years.
Data indicates that close to 10,000 preschool students have been completely deprived of the required services, with the majority coming from low-income Black and Latino communities.Certain parents have voiced their plight, saying they have had to independently seek out special education services for their children. Although the Department of Education has been offering reimbursements, parents believe that this responsibility should not rest on their shoulders.
In response, the Department of Education has announced its commitment to allocate over $50 million in order to generate additional spaces in programs aimed at better addressing the needs of students requiring these services.
