Greg Abbott Continues Bussing Migrants To NYC

In a decision that has generated controversy and raised concerns, Texas Governor Greg Abbott revealed on Friday that his state would persist in transporting migrants from border towns grappling with the challenges posed by current immigration policies to New York City. This choice was made despite New York Governor Kathy Hochul’s insistence that the city is already operating at full capacity.

Abbott conveyed his perspective on the matter, asserting, “Texas border towns should not be burdened by the consequences of the open border policies under the Biden administration.” He made this statement on X, the platform previously known as Twitter, adding, “Texas will continue to dispatch buses to sanctuary cities in an effort to provide relief to border towns that are overwhelmed.”

Governor Hochul had made a request for additional federal aid to help manage the unprecedented surge of migrants arriving in the city. However, this plea was rejected by the White House, which maintained that the necessary funding must come from Congress.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams had expressed deep concerns earlier this month regarding the impact of the ongoing migrant crisis on the city. He cautioned, “This crisis has the potential to severely affect New York City,” and he called for increased state and federal assistance to handle the substantial influx of newcomers.

Despite the city’s appeals for aid, New York has received approximately $140 million in federal funding for shelters. This makes New York City the recipient of the largest allocation of such funds among cities not directly situated along the southwestern border.

In early September, data released by Mayor Adams’ office revealed that since the spring of 2022, over 110,000 asylum-seekers had arrived in the city. These statistics drew criticism from Governor Abbott, who argued that Adams was ill-prepared to address the challenges faced by Texas. Abbott countered, stating, “The mayor would not last a single day in Texas.”

Abbott’s approach has involved transporting thousands of migrants to various cities across the nation, including New York, Los Angeles, Denver, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. To qualify for transportation on these buses, asylum-seekers must voluntarily participate and furnish documentation from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security confirming their authorization to travel.

Abbott maintained his stance, declaring, “Until President Biden fulfills his constitutional responsibility to secure the southern border of the United States, Texas will continue to deploy as many buses as necessary to alleviate the strain caused by the surge of illegal border crossings.”
