Governor Abbot Busses Himself To NYC & Updates Crowd About The Migrant Crisis

An escalating conflict between Texas Governor Greg Abbott and New York City Mayor Eric Adams is unfolding this week, with the Governor going so far as to follow one of his buses carrying migrants to NYC on Wednesday.

Governor Abbott has overseen the transportation of 15,300 migrants from the U.S.-Mexico border to New York City, according to his count. This move prompted Mayor Adams to label him “a madman,” threaten to campaign against Abbott, and accuse him of exploiting the crisis to harm cities with Black mayors.

Abbott countered earlier this month with a retort that Mayor Adams “wouldn’t last a week” in Texas.

The Governor appears to derive amusement from the predicaments faced by mayors like Adams. He remarked that self-declared sanctuary cities like New York “love to promote these liberal ideologies until they actually have to live up and apply them.” This is a criticism that has been voiced by individuals on both sides of the political spectrum regarding so-called “sanctuary cities”—using migrants as a political bargaining tool, proclaiming sanctuary status, and subsequently failing to fulfill their promises to the people they claim to assist.

In fact, back in August, The Wall Street Journal’s Allysia Finley criticized New York City’s complaints, characterizing it as a “self-inflicted crisis.” Moreover, 77 Democratic lawmakers have expressed their concerns about the Biden administration’s handling of immigration.

Governor Abbott has vowed not to yield to the Biden administration, as stated in a social media post.

Abbott is scheduled to speak this morning at a breakfast event in Midtown, hosted by the conservative think tank, the Manhattan Institute (MI). His agenda includes outlining his strategy for addressing the border crisis and engaging in an extensive discussion with Manhattan Institute President Reihan Salam, according to a statement from MI.

Neither Mayor Adams nor New York Governor Kathy Hochul plan to meet with Governor Abbott, and his office declined to comment in advance of his visit to NYC, according to Politico.

Hochul’s spokesperson, Anthony Hogrebe, conveyed her opinion of her Texas counterpart, stating, “Greg Abbott’s record on immigration is using vulnerable families and children as political props.” Hogrebe further suggested that if Abbott truly desires to contribute to a solution for this humanitarian crisis, he should encourage his conservative colleagues in Congress to collaborate with President Biden on sensible immigration reform.
