Police Arrest NYC Cyclist After He Complains Their Car Is Illegally Parked

When a cyclist in New York attempted to intervene as an NYPD officer was on the verge of parking his police car illegally, he found himself issued a ticket. The entire incident was recorded on camera, raising concerns about the standards upheld by the NYPD while also shedding light on the questionable tactics employed by the cyclist in question.

While it may appear to be a minor issue to those residing outside of New York, the problem of police officers parking their patrol cars on sidewalks is a widespread concern in the Big Apple. According to a recent study conducted by a professor from Berkeley, 70 out of 77 NYPD precincts were found to have instances of police cars being parked illegally on sidewalks.

In the video footage, the cyclist, identified as Louis M. by Hell Gate, the outlet that initially reported the incident, approaches an NYPD officer. This officer halts while in the process of maneuvering his vehicle into what seems like a makeshift parking space partially occupying the sidewalk. “Sir, it’s police parking,” one of the officers inside the SUV can be heard saying over the loudspeaker.

A verbal altercation between Louis and the two officers ensues and continues for several minutes before one of them issues him a citation for riding his bike on the sidewalk. In response to the article, Hell Gate received a statement from the NYPD, which read, “Parking around precincts is a persistent challenge due to our thriving, complex city and the limited space we all must share. But the NYPD strives each day to achieve balance as we continue to work toward common-sense solutions.”
