A Brooklyn resident named James Alexander, has initiated legal action against his former girlfriend, Monica Lakhaney, seeking damages of at least $50,000. Alexander alleges that Lakhaney had previously agreed to joint custody of their beloved Pomeranian, Teddy, with arrangements for alternating months.

According to Alexander, he and Lakhaney adopted Teddy in October 2018, and they jointly paid $750 for the 10-pound canine companion. However, Alexander, a 33-year-old finance professional from Williamsburg, claims that he predominantly shouldered the responsibilities related to Teddy’s medical, mental, social, and financial care.

The couple’s relationship ended in August 2021, but they had continued to share custody of Teddy. They adhered to a mutually agreed-upon schedule, with Teddy spending one month with Alexander and the next month with Lakhaney, who resides in Murray Hill, Manhattan.

The arrangement proceeded smoothly until September 17 when, according to Alexander’s legal filings, Lakhaney informed him of her unilateral decision to terminate the custody agreement. Furthermore, she disclosed her intention to relocate to New Jersey.

In response, Lakhaney has reportedly declined to return Teddy to Alexander, prompting him to seek legal recourse in an attempt to compel her to return the dog.
